Rava Tomato Bath

            Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.. The name itself suggests “Breaking the Fast”.. So it is important to choose a healthy and filling option… The word “Filling” is also not understood well.. As per my view, a breakfast,for example is filling when i don’t feel hungry till lunch.. Thus i have a lesser chance to indulge in junk food in between.. My own experience tells me that since when i stopped eating between meals, i have lost considerable amount of weight..

           This is why, in my blog, you will find a variety of easy and healthy breakfast options and this recipe is also a new addition to it.. This is my grandmas recipe who used to make it every week for us.. It was one of my favorite and i used to call it “”tomato ghalnu rullav” which means upma with tomatoes in it.. The flavor of the upma when tomatoes are added is simply awesome.. You have to try it to know..

It is a weekly once breakfast at my place as it is my husbands favorite one too.. Do try and you are sure to love it!

Health Benefits of Semolina: Made from durum wheat,keeps you full for a longer time and hence prevents overeating.. Improves Kidney function (due to its potassium content),Good source of vital vitamins E and B which are essential for good immunity from diseases..


1 Cup Semolina/Rava/Sooji
3 Cups Water
Salt to taste
1 tsp Sugar (Optional)

For seasoning:
1 Tbsp Oil
2 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Urad dal/Skinned Split Black Gram
6-8 Groundnuts and/or Broken Cashews
Curry leaves to taste
1 inch piece of Ginger
3 Green Chillies
1 Onion
1 Tomato

For garnish:
Coriander leaves to taste

1.Roast the semolina on a medium flame till it has a wonderful aroma and starts browning slightly..Keep aside..

2.Chop all the veggies and keep aside..

3.Heat the pan with oil and splutter mustard seeds..Add urad dal and fry till then are browned..

4.Add curry leaves, groundnuts,ginger and green chillies and continue frying  for few seconds..

5.Add sliced onion and fry till they turn translucent..

6.Add tomato and mix well..

7.Add 3 cups water and allow it to come to a boil.. Add salt and sugar..

8.Add the roasted semolina slowly stirring continuously with the other hand..

9. Keep stirring and turning over till the water evaporates..

10.Cover and cook for 5 minutes on medium flame..
11. Stir again till it forms a lump…

12. Remove from flame and garnish with coriander leaves..
Serve hot!
Note: To shape it the way i have done, just line a bowl with little oil and add the hot tomato bath to it…Pat it on the surface to give it a shape.. allow it to cool for 5 minutes.. Now slowly turn the bowl over a plate and the bath is all ready to serve…
