Horse Gram Idli

Making different types of Idlis has become my favorite hobby now since i have started blogging.. They are not only healthy and tasty but also the prettiest of all breakfasts.. You arrange them in whichever way, they look yummy.. I have already posted Cornmeal Idli , Oats Idli and Cucumber Idli.. Today i am proudly presenting a konkani favorite, Horsegram idli.. We call it Kulitha Ramdan at our place..It is traditionally made in a steamer laid with plantain leaves which gives it the awesome flavor…
But since i did not get the leaves, i decided to try in idli stand.. This recipe was suggested to me by my husbands aunt who gives me little tips in cooking always… I prepared it exactly the way she told and it came out awesome.. It is so filling that you will forget getting hungry the rest of the day..
I am very happy to have got this awesome breakfast recipe and hence sharing with all those who are new to it too… Do try and you will keep trying for sure!Health Benefits of Horse gram: Used in Ayurvedic Medicines for the treatment of rheumatism, conjunctivitis and piles,Controls fever, Helps lose excess weight,Lowers Cholesterol levels, Controls Menstrual Problems,Treats Kidney stones..

1/2 Cup Horse gram
1/2 Cup Urad Dal/Skinned Black Gram
1 Cup Idli Rava
(If not available, soak rice for 4 hours, drain and dry it over a cloth for some time…Then grind it coarsely to rava consistency)
1 tsp Fenugreek Seeds/Methi seeds
Salt to taste

1.Wash well and soak the horse gram and urad dal (along with methi) in separate containers for around 4 to 5 hours..

2.Grind the ural dal with methi along with sufficient water to smooth consistency..
Note:If using grinder,it is better compared to mixer as it will result in better smoothness of the batter..But i used mixer and it came out well too..
3.Pour it in a vessel..

4.Now grind the horse gram with little water to a smooth batter..

5.Add this batter to the ural dal batter and mix together with hands (to kickstart fermentation)..

6.Add the idli rava and salt and mix together with hands..
Note:If the water content is very less, add little water to make it into a batter with pourable consistency..If the mixture is dry,it will result in hard idlis..

7.Keep it for fermentation overnight or for 8 hours..

8.While preparing idlis, using a spoon, just mix the batter gently and pour into the greased idli moulds..

9.Steam for around 20 minutes ..
10.Allow the plates to cool for 5 minutes..Then remove them using a knife or a spoon…
Serve them warm topped with coconut oil and chutney of your choice!
