Have i managed to grab you attention with all those diet friendly words like “steamed”, “wheat”, “almond” and “no coconut”? Of course i have.. That is why you are here, right? First of all, A Very Happy Ganesh Chaturthi to all my readers… For all those who are not aware, this day is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha.. Even though we don’t celebrate as pompously as at my husbands place, i try to prepare at least some of the Konkani delicacies like appo as offering and chane ghashi for lunch.. This time i thought of going a step further and decided to try Ganpati bappas favorite, Modaks!
The authentic recipe of this delicacy uses rice flour covering and coconut – jaggery stuffing which is then steamed… Even though it sounded healthy, i wanted to substitute both the rice flour and coconut with healthier options.. I knew my favorite wheat flour could replace rice flour as i had seen a friend of mine posting wheat modaks before.. So that was done.. But what about the 1 Cup coconut? What could substitute those? Searching for “Modak without coconut” landed me nowhere… Was so sad.. 🙁
Finally Ganpati bappa found me this amazing innovative idea of using ground almonds as filling for the modaks… Was super excited!! Who will not be? I had got a steamed modak made with wheat flour and also the super healthy nut, Almonds for the filling… I was dancing!!hehe.. 😉
Just tried this dream recipe and it has come out very good… The modaks have this soft covering which when taken a bite, reveals its sweet filling of goodness.. Ahh.. A Bite of Heaven! Just loved it very much..

For the Covering:
1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
1 Tbsp Oil
A Pinch of Salt
Luke warm water as required
For the Filling:
1/2 Cup Almonds
1/2 Cup Jaggery
A Pinch of Cardamom Powder
Raisins to taste
1. Heat oil till slightly warm and add to the wheat flour.. Rub it in nicely such that the oil is well incorporated in the flour..
2. Add salt and luke warm water and form a stiff dough (Like puri dough)..
3. Keep it aside covered with a wet cloth for half an hour..
4. Roughly chop the almonds..
5. Run for a minute in a blender or food processor to get coarsely ground almonds..
6. Heat the ground almonds with the jaggery in a pan and keep mixing till it forms a uniform mixture..
7. Add cardamom powder and raisins and keep it aside to cool..
8. Take a small ball of the dough and press between your palms..
9. Now using your fingers shape them like a little well..
10. Place the filling in the center..
11.Fold the dough with fingers to enclose the filling with the covering and give the shape of a fig..
12.Steam them for 10-12 minutes…When they are done, the covering turns translucent and shiny..
13.Allow it to cool slightly and then serve…
Take a bite with “Ganpati Bappa Morya” in mind!!
Note: With the rest of the dough and filling, i made puranpolis/ sweet stuffed flatbread as they are my hubbys favorite.. It comes out yum as well.. Just follow my Cabbage Paratha recipe from step 7 using this almond filling instead…:)
