Oats Poha Idli | Oats & Beaten Rice Idlis

Am i posting too many breakfast recipes?? I ask this myself so many times.. But when i see the number of people who visit this site whenever i post any new breakfast option, all my doubts vanish off… Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day , i also tend to search varieties in them most often as both of us get bored eating the same everyday… As i said in my last post, this google search was transpired by my husband and this particular recipe was actually found by him {when i was busy taking a “small” break & browsing fb}… So Kudos to him for finding such a yummy and healthy recipe of Oats Poha Idlis!

                                But seriously i could not believe i had not found these idlis before… Even though i make Instant Oats Idlis quite often, an idli with rice,urad,poha and oats was far off my mind.. I was so attracted to the recipe that i made it right the next day…. Was so excited to see that it had come out perfect and went on clicking… Finally i had so many pretty pics that i had to collage them together… Don’t they look beautiful?? {Ha..Idlis and “beautiful”?? you might ask… Try asking a Idli lover, You’ll know why.. ;)}

Finally when i was in no mood to leave the camera, my hubby declared he was hungry.. Suddenly i could hear my tummy rumbling.. I was too!!! So threw away the camera {Not literally! No!!} and grabbed the idlis, dipped it in the chutney and straight into my mouth… Wow! It was too good…. You will never realize that this idli has oats in it.. So this is a perfect way to add the wonder food to your diet… Do try for a change over your regular idlis… Happy and Healthy Cooking!!

Adapted fromKamala’s Corner

{Makes around 12 idlis (depends on the sie of your idli mold) and 6 medium sized dosas}
2 Cups Rice {Regular/Parboiled}*
1/2 Cup Urad Dal / Skinned split black gram
1 tsp Fenugreek seeds/ Methi
1/2 Cup Oats
1/2 Cup Poha/ Aval/ Beaten Rice/ Flattened Rice
Salt to taste
*I used regular rice.. You could use parboiled too as per the original recipe..

1. Wash well and soak the urad dal with fenugreek seeds in little water for 4 hours..

2. Wash well and soak the rice  for 4 hours..

3. Soak oats and poha in little water for 30 mins…

4. Grind urad-fenugreek mix using little of the soaking water to a smooth paste.. Pour it in a wide bowl..

5. Grind rice,poha and oats together to a slightly coarse paste and add to the bowl..

6. Add salt and mix both the batters together with hands to kick start fermentation..

7. Keep in a warm place at rest for 8 hours or overnight.. The batter doubles in size..

8. Mix just once or twice using a spoon… You will see bubbles forming which shows that the batter has well fermented..

9. Now pour around 2 Tbsp of batter in each mold and steam them for 15 to 20 mins till a toothpick inserted in the center of the idli comes clean…
Note: Greasing the idli plates with little oil helps the idlis come out clean after steaming..

10. Allow them to cool… Now remove the idlis from the plate using a knife or spoon..

Enjoy them with chutney of your choice or sambar!
Note: Leftover batter can be refrigerated and dosas can be made the next day..
