Moong Dhokla | Green Gram Savory cake

The soft and spongy ‘melt in the mouth’ dhoklas have been one of my favorite snacks (after samosas and  Pani Puri of course!).. Though i always make the microwave version of Instant Dhokla, i fell in love with this ‘Go Green’ yummy looking Moong Dhokla instantly… So let me narrate it as my love story… 😉

                            I saw it the first time when my friend Aparna Bhat had posted it in facebook… I had simply loved the idea of a healthy moong dhokla and kept staring at her pics for a long time awestruck.. Her clicks as usual were so fabulous that i could not help but fall head over heels in love with the dhokla…

Even though i had bookmarked it since long, i did not get the perfect opportunity to try it out { & click pics, of course!}… Last week, i finally tried it out and i am so happy it came out so well.. I am still in love with the beautiful green color the dhoklas have got… It makes me so happy that this is without any artificial colors and only by the use of green gram and coriander leaves…Simply Wow!

As for the taste, it does have the green gram flavor but if you are a fan of dhoklas, i don’t think you will have the time to even analyze the taste buds.. I just had great fun dipping it in sauce and with some bhujiya, it was a complete heavenly treat for a foodie like me.. And yeah, how can i forget my dear husband… He too is a huge dhokla fan and we had great fun eating out (oops sorry eating in!) the soft, spongy and super tasty moong dhoklas… Do try! RECIPE:

Adapted fromFlavors and Colors

Ingredients:

1 Cup Green gram/ Moong dal
1/2 inch Ginger Piece
5 sprigs of Coriander Leaves
3 Green Chillies
1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
1 tsp Sugar
1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
1 Tbsp Chickpea Flour/Besan
A pinch of Hing/Asafoetida
1 tsp Oil
Salt to taste
1 tsp Eno Fruit Salt [Any Flavor]

For the seasoning:
1 tsp Oil
1 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Cumin seeds
2 tsp white Sesame seeds[ To roast separately] {Optional}
A sprig of Curry Leaves
2 Green chillies
2 tsp Sugar
1 tbsp Lemon Juice

Coriander Leaves for garnish

Recipe:
1. Soak the green gram for at least 4 hours.. Discard the water..
2. Grind it along with ginger,coriander leaves and green chillies along with little water to a semi coarse paste with the consistency of cake/idli batter…

3. Add turmeric powder,sugar,lemon juice,chickpea flour,hing,oil and salt and mix well..

4. Add Eno fruit salt right before making the dhoklas and mix again..

5. Pour into a cake pan or a vessel that fits inside your steamer..

6. Steam for 15-20 mins till a knife inserted comes out clean and the top surface looks cooked.. Remove and allow it to cool..

7. Meanwhile for the seasoning, dry roast the sesame seeds till slight brown and keep aside..

8. Heat oil in a pan,splutter mustard seeds, add cumin seeds, curry leaves and green chillies.. Fry for few seconds..

9. Add sugar,lemon juice and around 1/4 Cup Water and stir till the sugar dissolves..

10. Invert the steamed cake onto a plate.. Cut into desired shapes.. Pour the seasoning on the pieces as evenly as you can…
11.Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves..
Serve them with chutney/sauce and Sev!
