Moong Dal Sweet Khichdi

This is a konkani dessert which is made during festivals..But since my husband likes it a lot and because it is good for health compared to those sugary sweets laden with ghee, I make it whenever our sweet tooth’s start tickling.. Khichdi is also made with chana dal but I personally prefer moong dal to it…

Health Benefits of Jaggery: Ability to cleanse the body, Acts as a digestive agent, Provides good amounts of minerals.



1 Cup Cooked rice ( Basmathi /any rice)
1 Cup Moong dal
1 Cup Jaggery (or to taste)
1 tsp Cardamom powder
1 Tbsp Honey (Optional)
2 Tbsp fresh/frozen coconut (Optional)
2 Tbsp Melted Butter/ Ghee
Dry Fruits ( cashews,raisins,almonds,etc) for garnishing

1. Dry roast the moong dal till it turns slightly brown…Take care to roast it on low flame and keep an eye on it as it tends to burn very fast…

2.As soon as it becomes brown, take it in a vessel and wash it thoroughly to remove dirt and impurities in it.
3. Soak it for around 30 minutes. (Optional but reduces cooking time)

4.Pressure cook the dal till soft.

5.Add the jaggery block into it and allow it to melt in medium flame.(You can also alternatively melt it in another vessel and then sieve it to remove the impurities, Then adding to the cooked dal)

6.Add the cooked rice to this mixture. Keep mixing on medium flame till the rice and dal are fully cooked and well incorporated into each other. Remove from flame.

7.Add cardamom powder and coconut.
8.Take melted butter in a pan and fry the dry fruits in it till golden brown.

9.Pour over the khichdi. Drizzle some honey over the top.Your Khichdi is ready to enjoy..

10.You can also add slices of Banana to it for extra flavor.
