Milagu Aval/ Pepper flavored rice flakes


It was after a long time that i sat looking for breakfast recipes from sites yesterday.. All the while i was lucky enough to be spoon fed with recipes either by friends or books or due to hubby’s recipe ideas.. So i never actually sat and searched for recipes.. I had loads of fun recipe hunting and was lucky enough to get around 5-6 interesting recipes which i plan to try within a week (No Patience at all!).. One of them was this Milagu Aval which i found from Jeyashris Kitchen, A site with very good recipes…

                First thing which attracted me was the name itself.. Such a unique name.. Second was that it was a recipe with poha or aval… I knew only one breakfast recipe with it which is the maharastrian Kanda poha and a weekly once breakfast at my place as it is very healthy and my hubbys favorite.. Third interesting thing i found after reading the recipe was it did not require chopping at all… Ah! Those words sounded like music to my ears..

So i finally tried it this morning itself without any further delay.. I made it even more easy by skipping the spice grinding part.. This recipe took only 10 minutes of my time… Hubby was very impressed with both the quickness of the recipe and its simple but yummy taste… This recipe is surely to stay at my place.. It can be a great evening snack too for all those of you who (like me!) hate time consuming snacks..

So do try out this yummy, spicy, healthy and easy to make Milagu Aval and enjoy it with a cup of hot coffee (or ginger tea like us!)….

RECIPE:

Adapted from: Jeyashris Kitchen

Ingredients:
1 Cup Beaten Rice/Poha/Aval (Thick Variety)
5-6 Cashewnuts
1 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Cumin seeds/Jeera
Curry leaves to taste
2 tsp Crushed Pepper/Pepper Powder
1/2 Tbsp Oil
Salt to taste

Recipe:
1.Wash the beaten rice well once or twice.. Drain and keep aside..
Note: Some quality of beaten rice need to be soaked prior to use.. So see if the rice has become soft while washing.. If not soak till a little soft..

2.Heat a pan with oil and add mustard seeds..Allow it to splutter..

3.Add cumin seeds and allow it to change colour…

4.Add curry leaves (torn into small bits with hands) and fry for few seconds..

5.Add pepper powder and cashews and fry for few seconds..
Note: I forgot to add cashews at this point.. so fried and garnished later.. That will also do..

6.Add the beaten rice and salt and keep mixing continuously for a minute till everything is mixed well..
7.Remove from flame..

Serve hot!!
Note: 1.You can also add or substitute groundnuts for cashews for that extra crunch and health dose..
2.You can grind pepper, cumin and curry leaves together to a coarse powder and add after the mustard seeds if you like as per the original recipe..
