Kharbas Dosa with Onion Chutney


When i first saw this dosa posted in a fb group, i was like whats with the name? Kharbas.. Never heard of it before..Then the following days, i saw that everyone was trying and posting it which tempted me to give it a try too..So, I now have a new addition to my list of easy yummy breakfast recipes..
            An unforgettable memory with this dosa is that my husband loved it so much that even in the morning hurry to work, he still wanted one more.. This made me jump with joy (I love to feed him!) as this has never happened with any of the other dosas.. He usually is in great urgency to finish off his breakfast and run (Haha!)..

So this dosa is obviously special for me.. I had also shared this recipe with my mom and his aunt and both of them loved it very much.. My mom also said she felt like having two more (Competition with her son in law Maybe!)..And now my mom has shared it with her mom (My grandma!) and i guess this recipe is going to spread like wildfire..

So if you still do not have the recipe of this dosa, here it is..And ya,this dosa tastes excellent with the simple onion chutney…Its like a match made in heaven…So Perfect!


For the Dosa:
1 Cup Rice
1/2 Cup Split Urad Dal
1 tsp Fenugreek Seeds/Methi seeds
1 Tbsp Flattened Rice/Poha
1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder/Haldi
3 Red Chillies
8-10 Pepper Corns
Salt to taste

Oil for greasing the pan

For the Onion Chutney:
1 Onion
3- 4 Red Chillies (Depends on the spice level of the chillies!)
1 small lump of Tamarind
A pinch of Asafoetida/Hing
Salt to taste
Few drops of Coconut Oil  (To remove the rawness of onions)

1.Wash and soak the rice and urad dal with methi seeds for around 4 hours.

2.Grind urad dal-methi seeds in a blender to smooth paste..Remove and pour into a bowl..
3.Grind rice till it is half done and add poha, red chillies,pepper corns and turmeric powder and grind to smooth paste..
4.Mix both the pastes together well with clean hands..Mixing with hands kickstarts the fermentation process..
Note: The batter should be of normal dosa consistency…

5.Keep it in a warm place overnight or for around 8 hours..
6.Add salt and mix gently..

7.Heat a pan and add few drops of oil..Pour a ladle full of batter onto the center of the pan and spread it using the back of the ladle as much as you can..

8.Cover and cook for less than a minute..This dosa gets cooked quicker than normal dosas..

9.Flip the dosa and cook.. (Optional! But we prefer this step..)

10.Remove from flame and serve hot..
11.For the Chutney: Grind together onions,red chillies,tamarind,hing and salt to a smooth paste…Add few drops of coconut oil on top and mix well..

    Let me first thank you for the collection of good and easy to try recipes on your blog. I tried this Kharbas dosa yesterday and both my husband and I loved it. I made coconut and hing chutney instead of the onion chutney. Now, I don't have to break my head and time choosing breakfast items every morning. Your blog has a good collection of tried and tested recipes. Keep up the good work and thank you once again.
