Kanda Poha/Seasoned Rice Flakes

I know you all must be thinking(In fact i too was thinking!)..Why this simple post? Kanda poha is the most simple of the breakfast dishes made in every home (of Marathi and Konkani specially)..So if you are not either of them and still make it, you are lucky to have known this simple delicious healthy breakfast… I am dedicating this recipe for all those who are yet to discover this yummy food..
         Kanda poha is actually rice flakes (which is flattened rice) seasoned with spices,potato and onion..In my home,it was a weekend breakfast for which i used to wait the whole week… Known as Batat phovu in konkani, it tastes best when made by my mom (Haha!Always for me!)..But as i have told earlier, my husband is the head of Anti Potato Association (he hates it so much!Sob!)..So no potatoes in poha…Therefore i have named it “Batat phovu without batato”(My mom laughs when she hears this!)..
Do try it and i am sure you wont regret learning this new easy healthy tasty breakfast dish or evening snack!!

1 Cup Thick Rice flakes/Poha [Brown/White]
(These are thicker than than the ones with which prasad is made!Thin ones dont work for this recipe!)
1 small Onion
3 Green Chillies

For Seasoning:
1 Tbsp Oil
2 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Urad dal
1 tsp Cumin seeds/Jeera
1 tsp Turmeric Powder/Haldi
Some curry leaves(I forgot to add this time!)
Ground nuts to taste (I add lots of them! Just love the crunch!)

Salt to taste
1 tsp Sugar (Optional! But gives a nice sweet twist!)
Coriander leaves to taste
Lemon juice of half a lemon

1.Wash the Poha well with sufficient water and soak enough to make it soft..Drain the water and keep aside..
Note: Soaking time depends on the quality of the flakes that you buy..Mine gets soft while washing and requires no soaking..

2.Keep Oil to heat in a pan and splutter mustard seeds..Add jeera and urad dal and fry well till..

3.Add Groundnuts and curry leaves(I forgot!) and fry till the groundnuts are slightly browned..

4.Add green chillies and onion and fry till onions turn translucent..

5.Add turmeric powder,salt and sugar and keep frying..

6.Add the soaked poha and keep mixing for a minute or so….

7.Garnish with coriander leaves and sprinkle lime juice on top..
Enjoy it as it is or with sev!!
Note: If you want to add potato,just slice a potato thinly,add after the onions and cook covered for 2 minutes.
