I know everyone loves to eat something different each day, be it breakfast, lunch,supper or snacking and i am no less.. I get bored eating the same stuff every day.. So i search for new ideas from various sites, food groups and recipe books.. But there are some recipes which are not at all new but have been long forgotten (at least by me!).. One such yummy breakfast delicacy is this “Chane Usli with Godu Phovu” and has become a new addition to my Breakfast Recipes World ..
This is a typical konkani breakfast and a favorite one too.. Chane usli is basically boiled chickpeas which are seasoned with spices and Godu Phovu is thin beaten rice mixed along with grated jaggery and coconut.. Both these dishes combine together to form a yummy, healthy and filling breakfast..
One memory associated with Chane Usli is that we used to get this as a side dish in primary school canteen and whenever i was asked what i ate at school, i used to say Chane usli always.. My Uncle still teases me regarding this and always asks when am i updating this recipe in my blog.. So this one is for him and my school memories..
I also thank my mom for giving me two wonderful recipes with the healthy Kala Chana, one being this sundal and the other is Kala Chana Masala.. Both are very yummy must try recipes..

For the Sundal/Usli:
1 Cup Kala Chana/Black Chickpeas (You could use the white ones too!)
3 Green Chillies
1/2 Tbsp Oil
2 tsp Mustard seeds
Curry leaves to taste
1 Tbsp Cumin seeds/Jeera
1 tsp Pepper Powder/ Coarsely crushed Pepper
1 Tbsp Freshly grated Coconut
Salt to taste
For the Sweet Poha:
1 Cup Thin Beaten Rice/Poha/ Aval (Thick variety cannot be used!)
1/2 Cup Grated Jaggery
4 Tbsp Freshly Grated Coconut
1.Soak the chickpeas overnight with sufficient water..
2.Boil it with water only enough to soak it in a pressure cooker till soft.. It takes me 4-5 whistles..
3.In a kadai, heat oil and splutter mustard seeds.. Add curry leaves and fry well..
4.Add the cumin seeds and allow it to change colour..
5.Add the green chillies and fry well..
6.Keep aside the water of the boiled chickpeas.. Also keep a small bowl of chickpeas aside.. Add the remaining of the boiled chickpeas along with salt to the above made seasoning..
Note: The water can be seasoned with mustard seeds,curry leaves and green chillies & served with rice meals as a side dish or soup..
7. Mash the chickpeas kept in the bowl coarsely and keep aside..
8.Add pepper powder to the sundal and mix well..
9.Add the mashed chickpeas and coconut to it and mix well..
10.Cover and cook on medium flame for 2 minutes..
11.For the Sweet Poha, Take grated jaggery in a bowl, add freshly grated coconut and beaten rice and mix well with hands crushing the beaten rice nicely..
Serve the spicy Chana Sundal with the sweet poha and Enjoy!
Note: Instead of pepper powder, you can add slightly crushed peppercorns if you like along with cumin seeds..It gives an awesome flavor..
