Jaggery Sheera – Sheera made guilt free!

Yesterday was such a wonderful day for me with the 5th birthday of my niece and a cute little nephew born.. Wow! Some days bring loads of happiness and yesterday was one such day.. Although we both need no reasons to indulge into desserts, these special reasons make desserts even more special… So, i decided to make sheera (kesari) which is our common favorite…

My story with sheera is also very interesting.. It was and still is my favorite dessert which my mom makes for me… In fact it was the only dessert i knew to make when i got married as its very easy to make… Since it was a favorite with my better half too, i used to make it often.. Little did i know the ill effects of sugar then…All that mattered was taste.. So when i waved bye bye to sugar laden sweets, i had to send my sheera along with it as it was also one of them… I did not make it for almost a year..Then some months back ,when i had this really bad craving to eat it ,a thought struck me “Why not substitute sugar with jaggery?”… So then a little google search and i found some people have tried it and loved it.. That made me try instantly and you wont believe how good it tasted..I can guarantee you will never miss the sugar in it…

It has made me a star in my husbands eyes who keeps telling me how good it tastes with no sugar (Haha!Am i blowing my own trumpet?)..But anyhow its the truth..Just try it once and you will know why…Actually its not a new age invention..In olden days, there were no refined sugar..Every dessert was made using jaggery..Its only now that sugar has replaced jaggery in almost everything and made life unhealthy..

Do try this yummy dessert once and become a fan of it as we both are!

Health Benefits of Jaggery: Ability to cleanse the body, Acts as a digestive agent, Provides good amounts of minerals, Healthy substitute for sugar..

I would like to add a point..Even though jaggery is a great substitute for sugar, consuming it in moderation is also necessary especially for Diabetic Patients..

1/2 Cup Semolina/Rava
1 1/2 Cup Water
1 medium size block of Jaggery
2 Tbsp Ghee
A small pinch of Cardamom Powder
Cashews and Raisins to taste

1. Melt ghee in a pan…

2.Fry cashews and raisins in it till cashews are light browned and raisins become plump..Keep it aside..

3.Heat water in another vessel..

4.Add jaggery when the water turns hot..Allow it to melt completely..

5.Meanwhile fry semolina in the same pan with which you fried the cashews on medium flame stirring slowly till you get a nice aroma of roasted semolina and its lightly browned..
Note: Take care to fry in medium flame or it can get burnt..Keep an eye on it…

6.Strain the hot  melted jaggery water using sieve and add to the roasted rava.. Continue stirring..

7.Keep stirring till it forms a lump.. Add Cardamom powder and mix well..

8.Remove from the pan and garnish with the roasted cashews and raisins..

Enjoy this quick dessert guilt free!
Note: If you wish to add bananas to the sheera {which makes it super delicious!}, you can mash it with hands or chop finely and add at Step 7 along with cardamom powder and mix well stirring continuously for around half a minute… Here is a pic of Banana Jaggery Sheera i made last day…. 🙂
