Green Peas Usli | Batani Sundal

                                 Ah, Feels so good to be able to come back to my little blogging world.. Did you miss me and my posts?? Those who are my fb followers at Healthy Cooking with Mitha might have not missed me as much as i was sharing all the cooking i did for my brother {who was visiting us!} there… He had ransacked Healthy Cooking with Mitha for all the dishes he was dreaming of tasting & it became a “revisiting old recipes” session for me.. Alongside, i really enjoyed the praises he was showering and that encouraged me to cook even more {which gave a huge blow to all my “diet plans”! 😉 }

Finally now that he’s returned home {missing missing 🙁 } and i am settled down, the recipe hunt has already begun leading me to many amazing recipes…. Also in about two weeks, it is my first Blogoversary {Yes! My blog is 1 year old!}.. So have to work double time to find the perfect recipe to share on the special day.. But having said that, i still have recipes pending to be blogged and here is one among them – Green Peas Usli..
Uslis or Seasoned peas are my favorite breakfast as they are light, filling and healthy… I have already shared my all time favorite Chickpeas Sundal and an amazing variation of Bread Usli with you.. Combine it with some crispy sev {or some tapioca chips, like my hubby!} and you get a wonderful breakfast or snack… That reminds me, here is the treasure box of special Kerala delicacies that my dad sent for us… These are enough for at least an year {or two! 😀 }.. Ah, my dad and his generous foodie mind!

Treasure Box of Goodies from God’s Own Country!

Coming back to the green peas usli, this is a must try recipe and one of the simplest but yummiest kind of breakfast ever.. Do try and enjoy! Happy and Healthy Cooking!!

1 Cup dry Green peas, soaked overnight/ 8 hours*
2 Green chillies, slit
Salt to taste

For Seasoning:
1/2 Tbsp Oil
1 tsp Mustard seeds
5-6 Curry leaves
A generous pinch of Hing/ Asafoetida
3 Red chillies, broken

For Garnish:
3 Tbsp freshly grated Coconut

*You can use fresh peas also… In that case, no need to soak.. Pressure cook directly.. Also if you don’t mind the flavor of frozen peas, you can use them directly without pressure cooking..

1. Take the soaked peas in a pressure cooker.. Add slit green chillies and water only till the peas is completely soaked as shown..

2. Pressure cook on high for 4 whistles or till soft..

3. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.. Add curry leaves..

4. Add hing and red chillies.. Fry till the red chillies change colour..

5. Add the pressure cooked peas and salt.. Mix well..

6. Cover and cook on medium flame for 5 mins..

7. Open cover and check for salt and if the excess water has been absorbed.. If not, cook without cover till the mixture turns dry..
Notes: 1. For the water to be lesser, add only required water while pressure cooking..
2. One more tip to get the perfect dry usli is to mash some of the peas slightly with the back of the ladle..

8. Garnish with grated coconut..

Serve hot as it is with your morning cup of tea or with some sev or bhujiya! We also love this with masala poha.. Will update the recipe soon.. 🙂
