Doon Chetin | Kashmiri Walnut Chutney | Akhrot Raita

  
                                          Does the name “Doon Chetin” remind you of the movie Dhoom 3?? It did for me.. As soon as i saw this recipe name, i wondered if it was yet another sequel to the movie.. Lol.. Kidding of course! Doon Chetin is nothing but Walnut chutney in Kashmiri cuisine even though i found it to be a healthy yogurt dip {or raita in “shudh hindi” ;)}..

                                           Now that you know what Mr Chetin is all about, let me narrate my story on how i came across this unique but delicious recipe.. Actually i was on a hunt for an easy Kashmiri recipe for the KKAJ state theme since a week.. While my hubby had finalized Kashmiri Paneer {Paneer crazy guy!}, i was in double minds as the recipe did not include onion and garlic.. After my flop “No Onion No Garlic” paneer curry some months back, i just did not have the courage to try it out..
                                             Finally this noon, when i had lost all hopes of finding the perfect kashmiri recipe, i was lucky to get this chutney {google searching like mad helps, i must say!}… First of all, i fell in love with the name {As usual!}.. Then the recipe, Omg! It was like a dream for me.. Super easy and very healthy… Went to check my pantry and there i find, a handful of walnuts waiting to be “chutnified”! 

                                                   Instantly made it for our lunch today along with Soya Chunks Biriyani and what an amazing combo they make.. The nutty flavors of walnut along with the little crunch of onions takes the humble yogurt to another level.. Really glad i tried it and it came out well.. RECIPE:

Ingredients:
1/4 Cup Walnuts/ Akhrot
1 Cup Yogurt/ Curd, whisked
1 medium Onion, finely chopped
1 Green chilli, finely chopped
Dry Mint leaves {Optional!}
1/2 tsp Red Chilli Powder
1/2 tsp Cumin seeds/Jeera
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves, finely chopped

Recipe:
1. Finely powder the walnuts in a dry mixer.. Keep aside..

2. Add onions, green chilli, dry mint leaves, red chilli powder and salt to the whisked yogurt..

3. Add the walnut powder and cumin seeds.. Mix well..

4. Garnish with coriander leaves..
Serve as an accompaniment to your rice meals, flavored rice or rotis!

Note: If you have the time, chill it for an hour so that the flavors infuse well and the chutney becomes tastier..
