Cabbage Bhath | Flavored Rice from Karnataka

Is there a dish for you which ONLY your mom can make and no one in the world can replicate it?? I have one too- Batat Bhath…. I can call it my moms signature dish and my most favorite one too… So what is this Batat Bhath?? It is actually Potato rice cooked in an aromatic masala and garnished with freshly squeezed lemon juice and loads of fresh coriander leaves…. Ahh… Can you get the aroma?? I can!! 🙂

                             But there is a twist in the story…. With a “Potato hater” for a husband, i do not have the luxury of making a “All Potato” dish and to tell you the truth, i was always sure i could not make it the way my mom makes…. So this dish was a yearly treat for me till last month…. Yes! Last month, I finally mustered up courage and asked mom for the recipe.. She was simply amazed {and excited and happy} to see that finally after months of pestering me to try it, i have finally agreed…. I told her i was planning to make it with Cabbage and she seemed scared {Actually she is always nervous when i try something new and especially if it is her recipe..}…

But nevertheless i made it and i must say it came out really good.. Though my moms magic was missing in it {which i can never replicate} i got a unexpected feedback from my husband… He took it in his lunchbox and after eating it, called me specially to let me know that he loved the rice.. Wow! Wasn’t i delighted!! 🙂

This dish has become a weekly once meal for us and nowadays, i even make it adding a potato along with cabbage and my hubby loves it too…. Now that was the real surprise for me… My hubby loving a dish with potato in it… Wow! And my mom!! I can feel her happiness every time i tell her how much we love it… She is definitely the happiest… 🙂 🙂

Health Benefits of Cabbage: Being an Excellent source of Vitamin C and a good source of Vitamin A, it is highly beneficial for our body’s health, Anti Inflammatory Benefits and Cancer Prevention, Reduces Cholesterol..


2 Cups Shredded Cabbage
1 small Potato, diced {Optional}*
1 Cup Rice, soaked for 15 mins
1 Tbsp Red Chilli Powder/to taste
Salt to taste

For seasoning:
1/2 Tbsp Oil
1 tsp Mustard seeds
A sprig of Curry Leaves

For the Bhath Masala Powder: [Please use exact measurements for this powder and don’t eyeball it.. Experience Speaks!]
1 tsp Oil
1/4 Cup Grated Coconut {Fresh/Frozen}
2 Tbsp Coriander seeds
2 tsp Cumin seeds/Jeera
1 tsp Peppercorns
1/2 inch Cinnamon Stick
3 Cloves
1 Cardamon Pod/Elaichi

For Garnish:
1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
Finely chopped Coriander leaves to taste

*Actually this recipe is made only using potatoes… You can skip cabbage completely and use 2 medium sized Potatoes instead OR add a small potato along with the cabbage OR skip the potato and make using only Cabbage,like i made here.. Either ways, it turns out yummy…

1. Roast the ingredients mentioned under “Bhath Masala Powder” in oil till the coconut turns golden brown in color… Keep it aside to cool..

2. Wash the shredded cabbage well and drain it…
Note: If adding potato, peel and dice and keep it soaked in water till use..

3. Powder the roasted bhath masala ingredients in a Dry mixer…

4. Heat a pressure cooker and add oil… Splutter mustard seeds and add Curry leaves..

5. Add the shredded cabbage {and diced potato,if adding} and fry till it loses the rawness..

6. Add the soaked and drained rice and fry for few seconds..

7. Add the bhath masala powder and red chilli powder and mix well… Add salt…

8. Add hot water till the rice is soaked completely or till the level you add while making flavored rice in cooker..

9. Pressure cook till soft… {Mine take 4 whistles on high flame over my Glass top Electric stove..}

10. Allow it to cool… Sprinkle lemon juice on top and add fresh coriander leaves.. Mix well…
Serve hot with tangy tomato ketchup…. A Super yummy combo both make!!
