Me and my husband are very different from each other in many aspects but one craving we both share is for sweets.. You feed us sweets any time of the day, we are ready to grab it! Even though we eat out gulab jamuns and buy jalebis once in a while, when preparing sweets at home, i prefer to use jaggery rather than refined sugar for obvious reasons.. But not all sweets can be made with jaggery.. Espcially the ones which has milk in them…Jaggery when cooked in milk tends to curdle the milk (Learnt this the hard way!)..
But there are many delicious recipes which uses jaggery in them and i have already posted two of them.. One is the all time konkanis favorite dessert Moong Dal Khichdi and the other is my favorite Sheera… This halwa is my third addition to the list of yummy healthy desserts..
My first experience with this halwa was when my aunt had made for me when i was a kid..I still remember i had loved it very much.. But after that i never had a chance to taste it.. Some weeks back i saw my friend posting a pic of this halwa in a social media site.. I was so much reminded of my aunts halwa that i asked her instantly for the recipe and decided to try it at the earliest..
So yesterday i finally got the chance to give it a try and was very happy with the outcome.. It is so soft and has this amazing taste that i have no words to describe it.. All the patience required while frying the wheat flour and cooking this halwa is worth it at the end and not to forget the halwa took only a matter of 5 minutes to get gobbled by the two of us!

1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
1 Block Jaggery/approx 1/2 Cup Powdered Jaggery
(Can increase if you want it extra sweet but this measure satisfies our taste buds!)
1 1/2 Cups Water
1/2 Tbsp Oil + A dollop of Butter/ 1 Tbsp Ghee
1 tsp Cardamom Powder
Almond slices for garnishing
1.Heat the oil plus butter in a pan till the butter melts..
2.Add the wheat flour and start frying it on medium flame..
3.Continue frying it till it turns dark brown in colour and all the rawness of the flour is gone..Take care to keep the flame medium to low else it burns very quickly..
Note: See the colour changes in my flour during the frying..
4.Meanwhile boil water in another vessel and melt jaggery in it..
5.When the flour turns dark brown, sieve the jaggery water and add slowly to the flour little by little stirring constantly such that no lumps are formed..
6.Mix it well and keep mixing till it forms a lump..
Note: It takes some time..So have patience and keep thinking about the yummy outcome..
7.Towards the end,add cardamom powder and mix well..
8.Garnish with sliced almonds..
